Fixed Mobile Convergence Solutions

Fixed Mobile Convergence Solutions

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news blog! Our featured topic for the week is Verizon’s “Fixed Mobile Convergence” solution for both businesses and government agencies. We will take a look at Verizon’s news release in order to better understand what exactly this system entails and what it can do for you and your business.

According to Verizon’s press release, the Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) solution is designed to “make it easier for businesses and government agencies to mobilize their workers by harnessing the power of Verizon's IP and wireless solutions in combination with the BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System (MVS) from Research in Motion”.

The PBX Mobile Extension system implemented in Verizon Wireless’ Fixed Mobile Convergence solution “enables mobile workers to move seamlessly between cell phones and desk phones to maintain calls in progress; conduct real-time conference calls; and initiate mass notifications enabling businesses to quickly respond to urgent situations. PBX Mobile Extension is powered by BlackBerry MVS, providing users with intuitive and visual enterprise desk-phone features through menus built directly into the BlackBerry phone application”.

The press article breaks down the service features explaining that the system runs on “a single phone number that simultaneously or sequentially rings on up to four devices. It works with Verizon IP Trunking with Burstable Enterprise Shared Trunks (BEST) and Managed IP PBX and seamless integration with a corporate PBX. With this integration, users of BlackBerry smart phones from Verizon Wireless can have a secure mobile extension of their desk phones. If a user can't immediately answer a call, PBX Mobile Extension uses a company's existing voice mail system to provide a unified voice mailbox, eliminating the inefficiencies of multiple voice mail systems”.

“The services are key to Verizon's overall strategy to provide mobile phone users with the same capabilities available on an office phone so professionals can respond quickly and cost-effectively to customers and the needs of their businesses. This is especially important as workers toggle between the confines of a traditional office and anywhere else they may be conducting business - whether at home or on the go”.

What does this mean for you? It means that as technologies continue to evolve and new products are brought to the consumer market we will have them available for you in order to ensure you are on the cutting edge of technology and one step ahead of the competition.

The New AT&T MicroCell

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news blog! Our featured topic for the week is AT&T’s femtocell device known as the AT&T 3G MicroCell. We will cover the premise of a femtocell device, the function of the AT&T 3G MicroCell, and what it can do for you.

In telecommunications, a femtocell—originally known as an Access Point Base Station—is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in a home or small business. It connects to the service provider’s network via broadband (such as DSL or cable); current designs typically support 2 to 4 active mobile phones in a residential setting, and 8 to 16 active mobile phones in enterprise settings. A femtocell allows service providers to extend service coverage indoors, especially where access would otherwise be limited or unavailable. For a mobile operator, the attractions of a femtocell are improvements to both coverage and capacity, especially indoors. Providing a better service to end-users in turn reduces churn. There may also be opportunity for new services and reduced cost. The cellular operator also benefits from the improved capacity and coverage but also can reduce both capital expenditure and operating expense.

According to AT&T:;

“AT&T’s 3G MicroCell acts like a mini cellular tower in your home or small business environment. It connects to AT&T's network via your existing broadband Internet service (such as DSL or cable) and is designed to support up to four simultaneous users in a home or small business setting. With AT&T 3G MicroCell, you receive improved cellular signal performance for both voice calls and cellular data applications like picture messaging and surfing the Web.”

Device Features:

Enhanced coverage indoors – supports both voice and data up to 5000 square feet

Available unlimited minute plans – individual or FamilyTalk plans.

3G handset compatible – works with any AT&T 3G phone.

The AT&T 3G MicroCell is being well received by the general population, although many feel that AT&T should be swallowing the $150 cost due to holes in their 3G network forcing users to resort to the unit in the first place. Nevertheless, the device seems to perform as advertised, satisfying the needs of many iPhone and other 3G handheld enabled device users.

RFID or Radio Frequency Identification

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news blog! Our featured topic for the week is RFID or Radio Frequency Identification. We will talk about the history of RFID, the verticals in which it is most prominent, and how it can make your business run more efficiently.

In 1945 Léon Theremin invented an espionage tool for the Soviet Union which retransmitted incident radio waves with audio information. Sound waves vibrated a diaphragm which slightly altered the shape of the resonator, which modulated the reflected radio frequency. Even though this device was a covert listening device, not an identification tag, it is considered to be a predecessor of RFID technology, because it was likewise passive, being energized and activated by electromagnetic waves from an outside source.

Today, RFID tags are applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification and tracking using radio waves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader. Most RFID tags contain at least two parts. One is an integrated circuit for storing and processing information, modulating and demodulating a radio-frequency (RF) signal, and other specialized functions. The second is an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal. There are generally three types of RFID tags: active RFID tags, which contain a battery and can transmit signals autonomously, passive RFID tags, which have no battery and require an external source to provoke signal transmission, and battery assisted passive (BAP) RFID tags, which require an external source to wake up but have significant higher forward link capability providing great read range.

Currently, RFID tags are primarily being used for asset management and tracking, product tracking, transportation and logistics, animal identification, toll collection, and travel documentation. Its uses however continue to expand and evolve as the landscape of our industries continues to change over time. Other key opportunities include Electronic Vehicle Registration, continued penetration of RFID-enabled e-ID/e-government documents (including health cards), and continued expansion of library systems.

What does this mean for you? It means that as technologies continue to evolve and new products are brought to the consumer market we will have them available for you in order to ensure you are on the cutting edge of technology and one step ahead of the competition.

Mobility Consultant Application

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news blog! This week, the team at Manley Solutions is proud to announce the highly anticipated Manley Solutions Mobility Consultant application for both the Android and iPhone platforms. In order to best prepare you for its mid-March release, this editorial will be dedicated to previewing the application’s objective, features, and integration into your business.

During our development process, we continuously challenged ourselves to create an application that would be well-designed, feature-rich, and offer the client ease-of-use using a minimalist approach. We endeavored to construct a program that would deliver a digital catalog of Manley Solutions products and the tools necessary to turn your wish list into a purchase order in the palm of your hand. Our team set out to build a complete repository of the goods and accessories we offer complete with product descriptions, specifications, prices and detailed images, and our goals have been met.

Our modern touch-based interface will allow the user to search for our products alphabetically, categorically, and even by manufacturer. The built-in search feature, with product model number recognition, will allow for even faster access to pricing, descriptions, and specifications; for those who know precisely what they want. Our digital repertoire will enable the client to add products of interest into a wish-list of sorts at the touch of a button, allowing them to review the goods of their choice at a later time.

The wish-list referenced above, is more accurately a quoting tool, and one of the core features of the Manley Solutions Mobility Consultant application. This implementation will allow the user to review items of interest at a glance, with the product name, model, price, and quantity desired neatly outlined. This feature has the capability of generating a PDF version of the quote that can be further sent via e-mail to a person of the customer’s choosing, or convert it into a purchase order to be sent directly to the Manley Solutions sales team.

All of us here at the Manley Team are proud to have contributed to the design and development of an application that will further enhance and modernize the way we do business with our customers. We are also very excited for you, our loyal patrons, to get the opportunity to utilize our new application and share your thoughts and experiences in order for us to continually improve and facilitate our user’s purchasing experience. The Manley Solutions Mobility Consultant will be highlighted at CTIA this March and will be released to the public shortly thereafter.

AT&T Expands 3G Network & Continues 4G Network Release Plans

AT&T Expands 3G Network & Continues 4G Network Release Plans

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news feed! This week we’ll be taking a look at an AT&T press release from earlier this year regarding their plans to upgrade and expand their current 3G wireless network infrastructure. In addition, to keep things interesting, we will also review the carrier’s 4G network release plans as their upgrades are slated to begin this year, with completion expected in 2011.

With its network built on the 3G UMTS technology that is commonly deployed throughout the world, AT&T can boost the speed of its mobile broadband network and offer a wide variety of devices to take advantage of it well in advance of 2011-2012, when most industry observers expect 4G LTE networks and device availability to scale. AT&T plans to begin LTE trials in 2010, with deployment beginning in 2011.

In addition to the planned speed upgrade, AT&T is enhancing its mobile broadband coverage by nearly doubling the wireless spectrum dedicated to 3G in most metropolitan areas to deliver stronger in-building reception and more overall network capacity. Also, AT&T is adding thousands of new cell site backhaul connections to support the higher mobile broadband speeds enabled by HSPA 7.2 and LTE.

“AT&T’s network infrastructure gives us a tremendous advantage in that we’re able to deliver upgrades in mobile broadband speed and performance with our existing technology platform,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “With the array of smartphones, laptops and emerging devices taking advantage of AT&T’s 3G network today, we know that customers are excited to experience higher mobile broadband speeds, and we are deploying the right technologies at the right times to help them get the most from that experience.”

What does all this mean for us here at Manley? It means that we will more than likely see a marketing push from manufacturers worldwide in the near future promoting a new lineup of products specifically designed to take advantage of the 4G infrastructure being developed by AT&T as we speak. What does this mean for you? It means that as technologies continue to evolve and new products are brought to the consumer market we will have them available for you in order to ensure you are on the cutting edge of technology and one step ahead of the competition.

Manley Solutions Healthcare Vertical Launch

Welcome to this edition Manley Solutions news feed! Manley Solutions has had a long-standing presence in critical verticals such as public safety, professional mobility, and fleet vehicle solutions. In our ever-evolving line of work, Manley Solutions continues to find new and innovative partnerships & projects which allow us the opportunity to spread our reach even further. Today, we would like to announce our commitment to a vertical crucial to our infrastructure and livelihood, the healthcare industry.

We are witnessing a boom in the use of remote healthcare both in the United States and abroad, as almost one-half of U.S. hospitals use remote medical imaging. From emergency rooms to physician’s offices, from the home to schools and the workplace, telemedicine is extending the reach of healthcare services, improving care and reducing costs. However, in order to perform online consultations one has to have the infrastructure, workflow, and a change in culture to be successful.

While there is a growing demand for 'interoperability' between hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and physician practice information systems, the cost often exceeds the potential benefits. Many of the systems provided by Manley Solutions make participation in a Health Information Exchange (HIE) financially viable. These HIE’s collaborate to create a network intended to manage and monitor care in a healthcare setting; ultimately using technology to provide 'connected care’ to share data and patient records among providers, more efficiently and effectively take care of patients.

Telemedicine and remote patient monitoring are becoming an integral component in modern, quality healthcare. New mandates will force practices to adopt policies and procedures in order to avoid new enforcement provisions and significantly increased penalties. Critical changes include new provisions for accounting of disclosures; new patient rights incorporated into policies and staff training; and new requirements should patient data be breached.

In closing, Manley Solutions is committed to providing the best products, services, and customer relations in the wireless industry in order to ensure that your business thrives. We pride ourselves on delivering solutions to countless applications, regardless of what vertical or umbrella it falls beneath. We will be there, standing beside you, to make sure your wireless business goals are realized.

WiMAX vs. LTE

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news feed! In this blog, we will be taking a look at two of the next generation connectivity technologies on the 4G horizon; WiMAX & LTE, or also known as Long Term Evolution. We will uncover both facts and fallacies about the competing technologies and give our thoughts on who is most likely to emerge as the dominant market leader.

According to an article by WiMAX.com, you don't have to look hard to find a breakdown of the carriers and vendors that have pledged their support to one technology over the other, and analysis on how these organizations' support will affect the future of these technologies. Everyone is pitting the two technologies against each other in what they would have you believe is an epic battle for the future of wireless networks.

Robb Henshaw, the Director of Marketing & Communications at Proxim Wireless states that “Neither of these technologies will emerge as victorious over the other, and neither will be forced to accept a role as the "also-ran" in the annals of tech history. In fact, both WiMAX and LTE can and likely will play equally important roles in the future of wireless networks. At one point I hypothesized that those roles would be "access" and "backhaul" with LTE providing the access technology of choice and WiMAX providing an ideal backhaul technology for 4G networks. But I no longer think that WiMAX and LTE need to be pigeonholed into those exclusive categories.” Robb also states that “The fact of the matter is, even if WiMAX does not become the next wireless access technology of choice, it would still has a very important role to play as a backhaul technology for both 4G and Wi-Fi networks worldwide. WiMAX was originally designed as a wireless backhaul technology to begin with, and it is especially well suited for that task.”

As an industry, it is imperative for us to distance ourselves from the idea of a one-technology 4G future. In its place, we must set our sights on how wireless technologies will operate in conjunction with one another and understand that there are both noteworthy and wide-ranging market opportunities for both WiMAX and LTE.

The Kyocera KR2 Review

Welcome to this week's Manley Solutionsproduct review! It's a rough life for us here at Manley, testing some of the most advanced routers from around the globe. This week, we'll be reviewing one of Kyocera's latest innovations, the Kyocera KR2 router. Some routers are exceptional in their performance and truly set themselves apart, while others fade away into the endless abyss also known as the over-saturated router market. Thankfully, the KR2 falls into the former.

The Kyocera KR2 has come to us with both significant innovations & improvements over its predecessor the Kyocera KR1, and although there are a lot of positive aspects to cover, there are a few features that have room left for improvement.

We tested the KR2 using both a WAN connection and Verizon's USB727 data card. The device yielded great results in terms of performance on both counts in regards to upload & download speeds. We even connected our Trendnet wireless cameras to monitor our Manley HQ for the day and had no drop in framerate at all. The pros include, Wi-Fi Protected Setup, ExpressCard, Draft N 2.0 compliance, and support for advanced features. By supporting ExpressCard, the router gives access to multiple users with speeds up to 3.1Mbps download and 1.8Mbps upload for each user. An improved design enhances the KR2s overall aesthetics, although I personally feel that the antennas should be relocated to improve access to the network ports and power supply.

Some of the areas which could certainly use some attention include the price, the simultaneous user limitations and the lack of GSM support. Although ranging in the $250 price point mark, the KR2 can only host up to 32 connections as once as opposed to similar high end mobile routers which can maintain over 250+ connections at once. In addition, the lack of GSM support means that for those of us that use AT&T or T-Mobile services are out of luck.

In conclusion, Kyocera offers a good product with a lot of features and an ease-of-use which is far beyond many of their competitors. We understand that the KR2 is mainly targeted towards teams that are on the move and require internet access on the go where regular broadband access may not be available. For this, the Kyocera KR2 performs flawlessly and should be placed on your radar for consideration.

3G Wireless Modem vs. USB Air Card

Welcome to this edition of our Manley Solutions blog. We here at the Manley HQ get a lot of questions from readers, customers, family, and friends. We receive questions about our modems, routers, integration possibilities, and just about everything else under the sun. We take pride in our knowledge of the field and do our best to make sure that all questions are answered and that our answers also provide you with a broader understanding of our business altogether. One question that we seem to get asked quite often involves both 3G wireless modems and air cards. “What are the advantages of a 3G wireless modem over a USB air card considering they both lead to the same place; the Internet.”

The answer to this longstanding question is that both are in fact great applications but differ slightly in their technical properties and areas of expertise. Let’s take a minute to explain some of the viable differences a 3G modem has over a traditional air card. Ruggedized 3G modems are designed to withstand harsh environments and usage conditions such as those found in military, law enforcement, fire, and healthcare related fields. They offer internet connectivity over a cellular network to in-vehicle applications and can issue violations, look up license plates, report status of accidents, transmit patient data, or enhance dispatch services. They provide mobile workers a continuous real-time link for their bandwidth-demanding and mission-critical mobile data applications. Their embedded GPS makes them ideal for deployment in Public Safety and First Responders applications as well as in Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL),

These devices can also have a second cellular antenna connection for diversity unlike traditional air cards. When used in conjunction with the main antenna, receiver sensitivity is improved resulting in increased connectivity, coverage and reliability. They can feature over 10 GPIOs, a dedicated ignition sensor for vehicles, and have digital outputs that can be turned on or off on command or automatically to allow for remote control of sirens, door locks, and other components. Monitoring of doors, panic buttons, the parking brake, and excessive speed now become possible as well. Lastly, through their advanced device manager software as well as the multiple interface capabilities, remote device management, over the air diagnostics, configuration & firmware upgrades practically eliminate on-site visits to troubleshoot or perform changes are virtually eliminated.

I think that covers all of the major differences between both 3G modems and air cards. Although 3G modems and air cards both connect to the internet and in some cases can provide GPS coordinates; their similarities end there. 3G modems allow for additional antennas, inputs and have device managers which allow for advanced settings far beyond what a traditional air card is capable of. Next time you are out shopping for a wireless device I am sure you will make the choice that is right for you as you are now an educated wireless shopper!

How-To: Access Your Camera From Outside Your Local Network

Welcome to this edition of our Manley Solutions how-to special! Have you ever wondered what sort of shenanigans your employees perform around the workplace when you’re not around? Does knowing the reason for your babysitters refusal to come back to take care of your little Timmy no matter how much the compensation come to mind? Well, with a little help from the Manley Solutions team, now you can! This week, we are going to show you how to connect a wireless camera to your wireless router so that you can view it from your desk or any other location on the globe! Now let’s get started shall we?!

For our purposes we acquired a TrendNet TEW-633GR 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router and a TrendNet TV-IP410W Wireless Pan/Tilt Internet Camera Server. If you are not using the devices listed above, fear not. The instructions are generalized and will very likely apply to a wide variety of wireless devices. Now, before we dive in head first, please contact your internet service provider (ISP) and make sure that you have the ability to acquire a static IP address for your wireless router. This will be essential in regards to your configurations, especially for access from outside of your local network. Once a static IP has been acquired and applied to your router, you are now ready to go! Assuming that your camera and router have both been installed and are ready for use, access your camera using the internal IP address provided by the manufacturer. If you are using a TrendNet camera, proceed to the “Setup” screen and select “Network” in order to reveal the editable “Port Number” field. If you are using a wireless router of your choice, please review the manual in order to access the editable “Port Number” field on your device should you not be able to do so without assistance. The default port should be 80. Go ahead and change this port to 81 and save your changes. Now, in order to access your camera internally, you will need to key in the IP address provided by the manufacturer followed by a colon and the port number 81.
Ex: 191.167.2.1:81

Now that you’ve got your wireless camera configured properly, it is now time to ensure that your wireless router is setup in order to view the camera from any location in the world. Access your router using the internal IP address provided by the manufacturer and ensure that the “Connection Type” displays a static IP. Once this has been verified, be sure to take note of the IP address assigned for future reference. From here, select the “Advanced” tab and select “Virtual Servers”. For those of you not using a TrendNet router, please refer to your user manual in order to reach the “Virtual Servers” tab. Select “Enable” on the “Virtual Servers” screen and enter the desired name for your application. Ex: You Are Fired Camera. In the “IP Address” field, go ahead and key in your camera’s internal IP address without the access port suffix. Ex: 192.168.1.1 and then proceed to select “Both” from the “Protocol” selection tab. This encompasses both UDP & TCP protocols. Lastly, input the port you selected for your camera in both the “Public” & “Private” port fields. In our case, we selected 81. Save your settings. You are done! All you need to do now is to verify that your camera has been properly configured alongside your wireless router by keying in the static IP address you previously took note of in the web browser of your choice followed by a colon and the port number 81 as described above and you should be in business!

Now you are ready to promote the deserving employees and do away with those who spend their days flirting with the office receptionist as opposed to completing their TPS reports on time. You can also ground little Timmy for life for having put his sister’s Barbie in the microwave while wrapped in aluminum foil. And guess what? You saw it all from the comfort of your desk. Whether at home, at the office, or somewhere around the globe.

The Trendnet GreenNet Initiative

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news feed! Did you know? The United States has about 5% of the world’s population, yet we consume about 25% of the world’s energy. If we all recycled all our Sunday papers, 500,000 trees could be saved each week. A 10-minute shower can use more than 50 gallons of water. What is this about you might ask? In our pursuit for a greener future, this week, we here at the Manley HQ have decided that it would be a wise to promote some of the products in our lineup which deliver excellent results while reducing our global carbon footprint. According to the U.S. Government's Energy Information Administration, worldwide energy consumption is projected to increase by 50 percent from 2005 to 2030 with world net electricity consumption estimated to double from 17.3 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2005 to 33.3 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2030. A number of independent studies have linked increased power consumption to our overall negative impact on the environment.

For their innovations in power conservation techniques, we are proud to be resellers of companies like Trendnet who are determined to help produce more energy efficient products that contribute to the reduction of our carbon footprint. With this goal in mind, Trendnet created GreenNet switch-based technology. GreenNet technology is designed to reduce switch-based power consumption by up to 70% by providing electrical power on demand. Traditional switches operate at full power, 24-hours a day, regardless of switch loading. Trendnet GreenNet switches and routers incorporate the following three primary features to reduce power consumption:

1. Link Down Detect

A Trendnet GreenNet switch can detect if an Ethernet port is not in use. Power consumption for an unused port is then lowered by reducing the frequency for which the respective port status is confirmed. A port may not be in use either when no device is connected to the port or when the device that is connected to the port is powered down or in standby mode. Regular switches do not have this capability and therefore consume more power while performing the same functions.

2. Cable Length Detect

Less power is required to send data over shorter cable lengths. A Trendnet GreenNet switch automatically detects the length of the cable that connects the switch to the given networked device and adjusts the power supply accordingly. This technology functions automatically and requires no management.

3. Standby Mode

A Trendnet GreenNet switch reduces the amount of power consumed by operating in standby mode when it is not being used.

We here at Manley Solutions both use and take pride in being resellers of Trendnet products as we too believe in a greener, more environmentally friendly future. As technologies evolve and advance in leaps and bounds so should our concern for the world around us. We take steps at our HQ to do so by recycling, monitoring electrical consumption, and using environmentally friendly products whenever possible. Do your part and check out our lineup of great products through the links listed below and start saving our planet one kilowatt at a time!

Verizon Wireless 2010 4G Network Release Plans

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news feed! It seems as though Verizon Wireless is getting closer to solidifying their 2010 4G network release plans as testing furthers and continues to provide us with powerful figures. Because of current economic conditions Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, has turned to Alcatel Lucent and Ericsson to serve as the primary vendors of infrastructure equipment based on a high-speed wireless technology called Long Term Evolution (LTE), said Dick Lynch, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Verizon Wireless.

"LTE enables us to continue to meet business customer demands for a higher bandwidth, low-latency service that works broadly in the United States and globally, while helping us to meet consumer demand for mobilizing the many applications they frequently use when tethered to high-bandwidth wired networks," Lynch said Wednesday in his keynote address at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. According to “Mobile Tech Today’s” article regarding Verizon’s 4G testing, they state that the LTE field tests that Verizon and partner Vodafone have conducted in Minneapolis, Columbus and northern New Jersey demonstrate that LTE is capable of delivering peak download rates of 50 to 60 Mbps, Lynch said. By contrast, WiMAX networks currently offer average downlink speeds of two to four Mbps in the metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Portland. Verizon said it intends to open an LTE Innovation Center in Waltham, Mass., that will enable the carrier and its wireless technology partners to develop LTE products and services that target the consumer electronics, machine-to-machine, and business segments. "The appetite for new and innovative broadband services is insatiable," Lynch said. "People want new and customized content, relevant information and services, and increased opportunities to communicate with each other and the world around them."

What does all this mean for us here at Manley? It means that we will more than likely see a marketing push from manufacturers worldwide in the near future promoting a new lineup of products specifically designed to take advantage of the 4G infrastructure being developed by Verizon Wireless as we speak. What does this mean for you? It means that as technologies continue to evolve and new products are brought to the consumer market we will have them available for you in order to ensure you are on the cutting edge of technology and one step ahead of the competition.

Verizon Wireless Unveils Their 4G Network Plans

Verizon Wireless Unveils Their 4G Network Plans

Welcome to this week's Manley Solutions news feed! This week we have some news from the front lines of the CTIA 2009 Event taking place in beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada. Sin City brings us some hot off the press news from one of the major US mobile carriers; Verizon Wireless. The company is planning on launching its most advanced network yet starting in 2010. According to Tony Melone, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Verizon Wireless, the new 4G network will be designed to blanket the continental United States as well as the far corners of rural America. This also includes areas where their current CDMA coverage is not found today.

Although those of us in densely populated areas take high-speed wired & wireless access for granted, there is still a great percentage of internet users who are still crawling their way through the World Wide Web on dial-up connections. This news brings hope to those millions of residents outside of the urban broadband wire-line infrastructure that have not seen any new developments or advances in nearly a decade.

The effects of the lack of investment in these un-urbanized regions has become tremendously apparent as it has become immensely difficult for small businesses to grow and to move forward with operations, business plans, and projects while using outdated technology. Unfortunately there is not much the residents of these regions can do as it has simply been too expensive for the carriers to build connectivity infrastructures in the small towns and agricultural regions of the nation. With this reveal this week at CTIA 2009, it appears as though Verizon Wireless may be taking the lead on answering the prayers of millions of hopeful broadband users within the next few years.

In closing for the week, it looks as though Verizon Wireless is charging ahead with their plans and will be progressively working towards a smooth release in 2010. Project management for the 4G network will be handled in a manner similar to the rollout of the 3G network but with vast improvements as they have grown into a more experienced and knowledgeable provider since their last major infrastructure overhaul.

Cisco Making The World A Greener Place

Cisco: Making The World A Greener Place

Welcome to this week's Manley Solutions news feed! Cisco has recently launched a new initiative as they have declared their desire to assist cities across the world in going green! In an effort to lend the earth a hand by reducing pollution and increasing overall efficiency, the company announced that it will work with over 100 cities, mainly outside of the United States, to achieve this goal.

Cisco, the world's largest manufacturer of internet routers and switches is seeking to build "smart" cities by implementing IP technology at the core of their infrastructure thus developing a solid network amongst them. The ambitious two-year project is targeting the reduction of power consumption and pollution by initiating and executing plans to build better-managed power grids by using technology that promotes telecommuting and video conferencing.

Cisco has also been acquiring smaller companies which specialize in energy saving practices such as the Richards-Zeta Building Intelligence, a firm that assists companies in managing lighting and air conditioning systems to conserve energy to strengthen its capabilities.

In closing, it looks as though Cisco is moving in the right direction, improving the world's infrastructure one city at a time and moving towards a greener future. The company also has future plans to work with major cities such as San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Seoul.

The Evolution of Rugged Handheld Computers

Welcome to this week’s Manley Solutions news feed! This week we’ll be taking a look at some points taken from an article written by Brian Albright from Integrated Solutions regarding the evolution of the ruggedized handheld computer. We’ll go over their history, the technological advances that have been made, and lastly their future in a role of ever changing and advancing wireless technologies.

As stated in Brian Albright’s article “Rugged Handheld Computers Continue to Evolve”, ruggedized computers have had a long history in desolate work places, unkind world environments, busy warehouses, and dangerous field operations. Their technologies were limited, their displays were monochrome, yet they performed their relatively simple tasks with ease and efficiency while maintaining a solid reliability while immersed in harsh conditions making them very desirable. However, in today’s “Real-Time” work environment, the hindering ancestral technologies that have powered these reinforced notebooks and related devices for the last decade is no longer sufficient nor desirable and thus must be replaced.

The question is, with the economy in its current state, and so many new technologies and methods of connectivity ranging from 3G wireless networks to Bluetooth connections, it has become extremely difficult to make purchasing decisions of this nature. The reason being, large corporations do not want to risk investing in a technology that will become obsolete sooner rather than later in a time where markets are difficult and profits are low. For this reason, the new-generation of ruggedized handheld devices have begun incorporating a large variety of connectivity features and possibilities in order to adapt to the world of today. As stated by Brian Albright, we are now seeing support for new 3G wireless network technologies such as the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and high-speed download packet access (HSDPA) protocols which have made it possible to transfer larger amounts of data at faster speeds for field service, route deliveries, and direct-store delivery (DSD) applications. Field employees can now view a customer’s service history, download large image files or equipment schematics, and place orders or accept customer payment in real time.

In essence, this shift in demand opens a market for technology-based resellers to thrive. This includes wireless carriers, manufacturers, and small business owners with the desire and the means to revolutionize the consumer market by providing the right tools and the latest technologies to keep the world turning, and Manley Solutions, Inc. is on the forefront of this new horizon.
